What's worth making this week

Issue of 14 September 2026

5 formats moved in general content this week. Each one below is written out far enough that you could shoot it today.

The Anti-Listicle ('Things I Stopped Doing')

closing fast

TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts

A creator shares 3-5 habits, purchases, or practices they completely abandoned after reaching a specific milestone or gaining niche expertise.

Negative framing triggers stronger curiosity and loss aversion than positive advice. It immediately builds authority without feeling like a sales pitch.

The shape

15-25 seconds duration. Visuals: Simple B-roll of a daily routine (making coffee, walking, working) or direct-to-camera talking head. Hook (Text + Audio): '3 things I stopped doing once I realized [uncomfortable truth/goal]'. Text rhythm: Quick 2-3 second overlays per point with concise subtitles. Audio: Quiet trending lo-fi or ambient speech-backed track.

Micro-Relatable POV + Cinematic Score

a couple of weeks

Instagram Reels, TikTok

A 5-7 second looping clip illustrating an oddly specific, mundane internal thought process or daily friction point set to overly dramatic film audio.

Relies on contrast tension—the high-stakes audio juxtaposed against a micro-relatable scenario creates humor and drives comment section engagement ('I thought I was the only one').

The shape

5-8 seconds total. Visual: Unfiltered, single-take video of a subtle facial expression or minor physical task. On-Screen Text: 'POV: You [hyper-specific scenario that happens in everyday life]'. Audio: Trending dramatic movie soundtrack snippet or pitch-shifted orchestral cover. Zero talking.

The Silent Visual Rating System

a couple of weeks

TikTok, YouTube Shorts

A rapid-fire video where the creator reviews or rates 4-6 items, trends, or ideas using only facial expressions, hand gestures, and text overlay scores.

Non-verbal communication removes language barriers and holds viewer retention through fast-paced visual changes. High debate potential in comments regarding ratings.

The shape

10-15 seconds. Visual: Creator in frame holding items or pointing to text boxes appearing on screen. Pacing: 1.5-2 seconds per rated item. On-screen text: Item Name + Rating Score (e.g., '7/10'). Audio: Fast beat-drop or high-tempo trending sound synced to each rating display.

Camera Roll Dump + Storytelling Voiceover

closing fast

Instagram Reels, TikTok

A fast slide/video montage of raw photo snippets from the past week paired with a reflective, unscripted voiceover audio story.

Bypasses high-production fatigue with authentic, low-effort visual assets already on the creator's phone. Focuses audience attention heavily on voiceover hook quality.

The shape

8-12 seconds duration. 6-10 camera roll photos/short live-photo clips. Slide speed: 0.5s to 1s per photo. Text overlay: Hook summarizing the lesson ('What nobody tells you about [topic]'). Audio: Personal voiceover narration over soft background music.

The Reverse Psychology Hook ('Do NOT do X if...')

closing fast

TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels

A talking-head or active-work video that opens by explicitly telling a specific audience group NOT to do something or stop watching unless they meet a condition.

Triggers reverse psychology and filters out non-target viewers immediately, leading to higher retention rates among the intended audience segment.

The shape

20-30 seconds. Visual: Creator working at desk or setting up camera. On-screen text & speech hook: 'Do NOT [action] if you want [desired outcome]'. Text rhythm: Dynamic word-by-word auto-captions on center screen. Pacing: Snappy, direct delivery with no filler intro.

Next week we'll see which of these is still working and which one burned out — the ones that hold are the ones worth building a series on.
