What's worth making this week

Issue of 26 October 2026

5 formats moved in general content this week. Each one below is written out far enough that you could shoot it today.

The 'Things I Stopped Doing' Listicle (Reverse Advice)

room to run

TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts

A talking-head or text-on-screen format listing 3 to 4 common habits or strategies the creator stopped doing in order to achieve a specific desirable outcome.

Negative framing ('stopped doing') leverages loss aversion and counter-intuitive curiosity better than standard positive advice. High watch-through rate because viewers want to see if they are committing the mentioned mistakes.

The shape

Duration: 15-22s. Hook (0-3s): '3 things I stopped doing to [achieve goal]'. Body (3-18s): 3 rapid points cut every 2.5-3 seconds with bold center-aligned text overlays. Audio: Low-volume lo-fi or trending ambient synth track underneath direct voiceover. Pacing is crisp with immediate jump cuts between points.

The High-Contrast B-Roll Text Dump

a couple of weeks

Instagram Reels, TikTok

A 5-8 second looping video clip of atmospheric, low-effort aesthetic B-roll (making coffee, walking, working at desk) with a multi-sentence relatable insight or vulnerable truth layered over top.

Extremely low production friction. Forces high average watch time because the text takes longer to read than the video clip length, triggering automatic replay loops that signal high engagement to algorithms.

The shape

Duration: 6-9s single continuous shot or slow zoom. Visual: Crisp B-roll with lowered saturation or dark contrast. Text: 3-4 lines of sans-serif, center-aligned text in middle of screen. Audio: Trending melancholic, dream-pop, or slowed instrumental soundbite. Caption contains the 'read more' detail.

The Bait-and-Switch Subversion Hook

a couple of weeks

YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram Reels

Opens with an extremely bold, borderline controversial claim on screen or spoken aloud, immediately followed within 2 seconds by a subversion that reframes the entire message.

Triggers immediate cognitive dissonance and stops scroll momentum in the first 1.5 seconds. Prevents viewer drop-off by instantly satisfying curiosity while maintaining intellectual authority.

The shape

Duration: 15-30s. Visual: Tight lens framing on speaker's face or direct eye contact. Hook (0-2s): On-screen text with strong statement (e.g., 'Stop trying to build a personal brand...'). Turn (2-4s): '...until you fix these 2 things.' Body (4-25s): Quick 2-point breakdown. Cut pacing: Jump cut on every breath/sentence. Audio: Minimal or no music to emphasize vocal authority.

The Silent Micro-Rating / Gesture Review

a couple of weeks

TikTok, Instagram Reels

The creator rates 4-5 items, tools, habits, or concepts completely silently using expressional gestures, facial reactions, and physical taps/ratings on screen without speaking.

Leverages ASMR sensory engagement (tapping sounds) and non-verbal humor. Transcends language barriers and performs exceptionally well internationally without requiring voiceover talent or complex scripting.

The shape

Duration: 12-18s. Visual: Medium shot of creator at a desk or table. Format: Holding up item/topic -> physical tap on camera/desk -> immediate facial expression + graphic text pop showing rating (e.g., '2/10 OVERRATED' or '10/10 ESSENTIAL'). Audio: Crisp ambient microphone audio (amplified tap sounds) or minimal low-fi beat. Cuts occur precisely every 2.5 seconds.

The Visual Race / Countdown Challenge

a couple of weeks

YouTube Shorts, TikTok

A creator attempts to complete a focused task (designing a logo, decluttering a desk, drafting a strategy, sketching) against a large, prominent on-screen timer counting down from 30 or 60 seconds.

Creates built-in narrative stakes, urgency, and suspense. Viewers watch until the final second to see if the creator completes the task before the clock hits zero.

The shape

Duration: 20-30s total video length. Visual: Fast-forwarded (1.5x-2x speed) footage or rapid jump cuts showing progress. Overlaid with a prominent digital timer graphic center-top. Audio: Fast-tempo, rhythmic synth or pulsing beat track synced to the countdown timer tick.

Next week we'll see which of these is still working and which one burned out — the ones that hold are the ones worth building a series on.
